Your role in the Design Process: Content

— January 20th, 2010 — by jjenkins

After researching on the website, and discussing your package with your Salesmen, it’s pretty easy to figure out just what you expect us here at Only Dentist to do for you – build you a good looking, functional website. But what is your job in the process? What do we expect and hope to get out of you?

Probably the most sought-after information we’ll ask you about is content. What do you want on your website? What is the text and body of each page going to say? For some people this can be a nightmare task, and all-to-often results in a delayed launch of the website. So let’s spend a moment and go over some pointers that will help you assemble and create your content.

How Important is Content?

Some of you may not be very heavy readers when it comes to surfing the net. You’ll give a site a quick glance, check out the images and the bold text, and then either stay with the site and look around or jump ship to another. So you may wonder what is the importance of good content?

The answer is simple – SEO. Google, Yahoo, Bing and all the other search engines are going to read every word you put on your website. Everything. And the only way for them to know what your website is about is for you to have good, relevant and informative content. So if you’d like your website to perform well in the search engines, you need to spend quality time developing solid content.

Where to start

This is often the most difficult part for clients to do in regards to content – starting. Our recommendation here at Only Dentist is that you first decide what you want each page to be about. Just about every website has an about page so let’s start there. Get a piece of paper and create a simple list of things about you or your business. Don’t worry about writing complete sentences and creating paragraphs just yet – just create an outline of points. Once you have 5-10 items to pull from, it’s much easier to form sentences and paragraphs that relate to the content you wish to convey.

Once you’ve done that, move on to the next page. Getting all the content just right may take you a few hours, but trust us when we say that it will make the whole process so much easier.

How much is enough?

Remember how we talked about most users probably not reading too much of the content? Well, that should give you an idea of how much is enough. A good amount would be around 3-5 paragraphs of text; most visitors aren’t going to be interested in reading a novel and might even navigate away if they see lots of text and lots of scrolling. So once again, figure out the main points you want to cover, and say just enough to make sense, but not too much to drive people away. You can always ask for our input as you put this together.

Testimonials

"For 3 years I tried to build my website myself with no luck. I just never could find the time to do it through my template builder software. I finally called Only Websites in the fall of last year. It took them 3 weeks to get the website live and the traffic has been pouring in to my site. I have reduced my YellowPage budget by 75% and other marketing has followed the same. I have made more money from my site than any other marketing tactic combined. It was a great investment." ~ Stephen Terence Jackson
